How (and why) to care of mascara and its brush?

You bought a mascara and wonder why it doesn’t coat your lashes as neatly as it used to a few weeks ago? You keep noticing more and more lumps between the bristle, the brush doesn’t separates your lashes any longer and the entire eye make-up simply looks a little bit sloppy? Surprisingly, mascara doesn’t necessarily be the one to blame. It turns out that the final make-up effect is influenced by the fact whether we take care of the applicator, or not. Let’s give you a few hints on how to help your mascara deliver long-lasting and precise eye make-up, and how to gift eyelashes with attractive appearance.

Why is it better to care for mascara?

Mascara is a cosmetic that seems to be a fairly durable and long-lasting product but, sadly, it’s not. In spite of the fact that it gradually oxidizes every time the brush is taken out the tube, its clots are super-fast to dry out to create residues between the bristle. The very mascara clots make lumps that cling to lashes. Moreover, with time mascara may change its consistency if you don’t care of it the right way. This result with clumpy eyelashes, reduced mascara’s lifespan, fast drying out and flaking off when applied. How to prevent this?

How to care for mascara?

1. Wash your mascara brush

If you want to keep our eye make-up constantly flawless, and prevent lashes from housing blemishing lumps – remember to wash your mascara brush. Just warm water or water combined with delicate hypoallergic lotion or natural soap will suffice. Keep cleaning your applicator delicately, especially if you use nylon, ‘hairy’ brushes. Bear in mind that their bristle is easy to distort. It’s easier to keep silicone mascara brushes clean and also they are more durable. Last but not least, mascara brush should be washed at least twice a month (best if washed once a week).

2. Screw your mascara cap tightly

Mascara is a cosmetic that gradually reacts with air. Hence, in order to keep its consistency unchanged, always check whether it’s tightly screwed. Furthermore, try not to ‘pump’ air inside the bottle, so don’t move the brush up and down – after all, you won’t gather more mascara onto the brush by doing this. What you really achieve by applying this motion is worsened consistency of the product. As a consequence, mascara will dry out faster because water the product contains will simply evaporate quicker.

3. Don’t water your old mascara neither with make-up removing lotions nor other liquids

Adding make-up removing lotion or micellar lotion to a mascara is a common practice which, unfortunately, doesn’t have positive impact on the product’s quality. Substances the runny cosmetics contain may react adversely with mascara molecules. This in turn can have miserable consequences: starting from changing quality and durability of mascara through poorly-looking eye make-up, and ending in allergic reactions. However, if your mascara is getting thick, you can put the tube into a glass of warm water. The bottle will warm up and mascara itself will turn more runny. This trick will save your day when mascara takes you aback before some big life event or in the morning while you’re getting ready for work. Still, it’s better to replace a dense mascara with a new, fresh one.
